Our $10K Challenge to Former President Obama, Lupita Nyong’o and Tom Morello

The Maasai People Need Your Help

You already know that since Covid-19 emerged, we have been channeling our time and our funds into providing vegan food relief to those in need all around the world, including to Maasai communities in southwestern Kenya.

Today we are challenging former President Barack Obama, actress Lupita Nyong’o and musician Tom Morello – all people with Kenyan heritage – to support our work by donating $10,000 towards this relief program.

Maasai Communities Hit Hard by Covid

In normal times, the Maasai make and sell craft goods and trinkets to tourists but the sudden loss of visitors due to the pandemic is having a devastating impact. Maasai community leader Jack Lekishon told us “I fear that hunger and starvation will even kill people more than the Covid-19 pandemic! Some going for weeks without food at all.”

We acted immediately, and pledged 50,000 meals (along with water, hygiene products and masks), and we have already begun working with Jack and his team of volunteers to get food to those most in need. This will provide the Maasai with short-term relief but it is not sufficient to sustain them for very long.

Now, one of our donors has said he will fund another 50,000 meals, at a cost of $10,000, if former President Barack Obama, Lupita Nyong’o or Tom Morello also agree to donate $10,000.

Why Barack Obama, Lupita Nyong’o and Tom Morello?

Former president Barack Obama is half Kenyan, and his foundation – The Obama Foundation – has launched a year-long initiative in Africa whose mission is “to build a growing network of innovative and ethical changemakers who will drive positive change in their communities, the continent, and the world”. We believe this is an initiative he would very much like to support.

Actress Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years A Slave) is the daughter of a Kenyan politician and last year she teamed up with a fashion brand to campaign against global hunger. Watch Hunger Stop has so far delivered 18 million meals to school children.

Musician Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine) is also the son of a Kenyan politician, and his cousin Uhuru Kenyatta is the current Kenyan President. Tom, who is vegetarian, has as his Twitter bio: “Feed the poor. Fight the power. Rock the f*ck out.”

We feel sure these three compassionate people, all with Kenyan heritage, will want to support the Maasai food relief program, and help us support even more people through this difficult time.
